I think my perspective as a young adult who was almost a part of the military can be summed up in the part of my story where I leapt my lazy butt out of bed when my mother said "They hit the Pentagon!" <br /><br />Loss of security - simply put. Up until that day the biggest, baddest terrorists the U.S. had came from within and were lone nuts that targeted (relatively) small targets (the Unabomber mailbombed individuals, the OK City Bombing was a single federal building). 9/11 was a systematic, intelligent attack on key portions of our government and commerce. It was the moment where I went from thinking I lived in the biggest, baddest mofo country in the world to thinking "we could really fall." <br /><br />I've always had a bit of a morbid outlook in regards to personal mortality.
